Accessible Formats and Collections

Chatham-Kent Public Library offers a wide range of materials in alternate formats for customers with visual impairments, physical disabilities, and learning disabilities.

Finding Descriptive Videos in the Catalogue

CKPL carries many descriptive videos and now it's easier to search these in our catalogue. Descriptive videos have been augmented with special narration which describes the action for people who have visual impairments. For a list of descriptive videos, click here.

Large Print Books

Large print books are available at all of our library branches. Titles include of best-sellers and a variety of genres. These books may be placed on hold and delivered to your local branch.

Books on CD

CKPL offers a variety of books on CD for patrons to borrow. Enjoy full length recordings of books including best-sellers, a variety of fiction genres, and non-fiction. We have books on CD for children, teens and adults. These items may be placed on hold and delivered to any CKPL branch.


Playaways and Playaway Views offer an all in one experience. Both come preloaded to either listen or watch your book. Playaways are available for both adults and children. Playaway Views are available for children.

Downloadable Titles

There are a variety of ebooks, eaudiobooks, and emagazines for children, teens, and adults that can be downloaded to your computer or personal devices through our online services.  For more information about our downloadable titles, click here.


CKPL has both Sony eReaders and Kobo Arc 7 HDs available for patrons to borrow.  eReaders provide the ability to adjust the font size of an eBook at will. For more information on our eReaders, click here.

Assistive Technology

You can scan a book on the SARA (scanning and reading appliance) and have it read back to you in one of 18 languages. This device is available in Chatham but can be sent to another branch on request.

Home Service

This service is available for patrons who are homebound due to illness, age, or disability. A variety of materials, including books, large print books and books on CD, are selected and delivered by volunteers to you free of charge.  For more information about home service, click here

Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA)

CKPL is registered with the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA).  Access to the CELA collection is available to people who are unable to read conventional print due to a disability, including visual, physical or learning disabilities.

Through CELA, CKPL can offer patrons an additional collection of over 230,000 books, magazines, newspapers and described videos in a choice of formats for people with a print disability.  This collection includes:

  • Lots of choice including current bestsellers, award-winders and classics
  • Fiction, non-fiction, self-help, business and more
  • Books for kids, teens and adults
  • Books in both English and French
  • Books in audio, braille or accessible ebook formats

Signing up for CELA is as easy as submitting an application on their website.  If a person is unable to complete the application themselves, library staff would be happy to assist them.  Once submitted, materials in digital format are available for instant download.  Physical materials can be ordered through CELA’s website, and are mailed at no cost, directly to the patron (and are returned the same way).
