Falls Hurt

Any fall is a risk for a future fall, even one that does not cause injury. A fall happens because of lack of balance or an inability to recover balance.

Reduce your risk
Tell your doctor or health care provider if you have had a fall.

One in two over the age of 80

Common Causes of a Fall
Many people think that falls are just something that happens as you get older and there is nothing you can do.  This is not true.  Anyone can fall, but the risk of falling becomes greater with age because of things such as:

  • poor balance
  • decreased muscle and bone strength
  • fear of falling
  • medication side effects
  • taking more than 4 medications
  • reduced vision or hearing
  • inability to access healthy food and drink choices
  • drinking alcohol
  • risky behaviours
  • clutter
  • tripping over pets
  • unsafe conditions - in and around your home loose toilet seats, poor lighting, scatter mats, commonly used items keep on high shelf
