Ontario Works

Their goal is to improve the quality of life for families and individuals, to provide opportunities for learning, growth and promote self-sufficiency.

If you are in temporary financial need, Ontario Works can provide you with money, or help you find a job.

Financial Aid

If you qualify, Ontario Works can provide you with money to help you cover the costs of your basic needs (e.g. food) and housing costs. This is called financial assistance.

The amount of money you may receive from Ontario Works will depend on your:

  • Family size
  • Income
  • Assets
  • Housing costs
  • Other help you are receiving

You may also be eligible to receive a variety of other benefits such as:

  • Prescription drug and dental coverage
  • Eyeglasses
  • Diabetic supplies
  • Moving or eviction costs
  • Employment-related costs

To be eligible to receive help from Ontario Works, you must:

  • Live in Ontario
  • Need money right away to help pay for food and housing costs
  • Be willing to take part in activities that will help you find a job

Employment Assistance

Ontario Works can give you practical help to prepare for and find a job by:

  • Working with you to determine what you need to become employed
  • Helping you develop a plan based on your skills, experience and circumstances

Examples of services we provide to help you find a job:

  • Workshops on looking for work, résumé writing, and preparing for an
    interview
  • Referrals to job counselling or training programs
  • Information on who's hiring
  • Access to basic education
  • Access to telephones, faxes, computers and job banks

To be eligible for Ontario Works, you must take part in activities that will help you find a job. These are called employment assistance activities.

Receiving Help from Ontario Works - Participation Agreement

To receive Ontario Works, you have to sign a Participation Agreement. This agreement sets out the employment assistance activities that you will do to find work and/or improve your skills.

The Agreement is updated regularly when you complete activities or begin new ones.

Ontario Works also offers programs to assist businesses, the local economy, community agencies and non-profit groups.
