Childcare Subsidy

Little girl playing with building blocks

Our division offers financial help with childcare costs for parents or legal guardians. If you are from Chatham-Kent and working, going to school, or have children with special needs, you can apply.

You may be eligible for full or partial childcare subsidy if:

  • You are living in Chatham-Kent
  • You have confirmed that a space is available for your child(ren) at a licensed childcare centre, home-care provider with a licensed childcare agency or registered High Five Recreation Program that has a Purchase of Service Agreement with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
  • You are the child’s parent, foster parent, or legal guardian and the child is living with you
  • You have filed a Federal Tax Return and have a Notice of Assessment or Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) from the most recent tax year
  • You are attending school and/or working
  • Your child has been referred, in writing, by two referring agencies.  A referring agency may be a doctor, speech therapist or other professional who is currently working with you or your child.

Steps to Apply for Childcare Subsidy

1. Apply for childcare through our Childcare Waitlist (an online registry to apply to multiple childcare programs at once). Ensure you check off that you require subsidy.

2. When a space becomes available for your child at any of the childcare locations you have applied to, you will be contacted by the Childcare Supervisor.

3. Once your child has been placed at the childcare centre, our Subsidy Caseworkers will be notified (as long as you have indicated you will need subsidy on your online application). They will call to book a subsidy appointment with you.

4. Attend the application appointment with all necessary documents. Please be aware that if you do not have all necessary documents your application will be delayed. Other documents may be required specific to your circumstances. Your caseworker will advise you on what to bring.

Necessary documents include:

• Child Tax Benefit Summary or Notice of Assessment from Canada Revenue Agency
• Statement of Universal Child Care Benefit (if applicable)
• Birth verification for all household members
• Proof of income source ( i.e., pay stubs, Ontario Works stub, OSAP summary)
• Verification of student status and schedule (if applicable)

Your eligibility depends on these documents. If you don’t have these documents, please call your caseworker to reschedule the appointment and get more information.  The full cost of childcare is the parent's responsibility until the subsidy application is complete.

Once Receiving Childcare Subsidy

Parents are responsible for the following:

  • Renewing your childcare subsidy agreements every 6 months with your caseworker. Please respond promptly to contact from your caseworker.
  • Informing your caseworker of any changes to your work or school circumstances, living arrangements, address and contact information.
  • Giving at least 2 weeks notice to the childcare centre and caseworker before withdrawing your child(ren) from care. This is important to avoid costs being charged that cannot be covered by subsidy..
  • Ensuring that you contact your caseworker before registering your child in any program or switching your child to a new program.

Details of all responsibilities are outlined in your parental agreement.
