Meet Me at The Eau: Celebrating Erieau’s Centennial

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Village of Erieau. To celebrate this milestone, the Blenheim Heritage House will be featuring the exhibition “Meet Me at The Eau: Celebrating Erieau’s Centennial.” Blenheim business man, Sherman Malcolm, coined the term “Erieau” in the early 1900s when he combined the name of the two bodies of water that surround the sandspit – Lake Erie and Rondeau Bay. Prior to that time, Erieau was referred to as The Eau, The Bar, and The Piers.

Erieau has been a recreational destination since the late 19th century when trains from Chatham and Blenheim, and passenger ships from Ohio brought crowds out to the sandbar. Visitors flocked to The Eau to enjoy fishing, boat races, dancing, and picnics, and soon cottages and hotels sprang up along the bay. The 20th century saw the growth of commercial fishing and the use of the harbour as a coal terminus for the railway. These two industries were a central part of village life for decades.

Before you head out to Erieau this summer, be sure to visit the exhibition “Meet Me at the Eau” to discover historic artifacts and photographs that celebrate the unique heritage of this lakeside village.

The exhibition is an outreach project of the Chatham-Kent Museum and will open June 24, 2017 at the Blenheim Heritage House, just in time for the Historical Society of Blenheim and District’s 7th annual Antiques and Collectibles Yard and Book Sale. Don’t miss this great collector’s opportunity, which starts June 24th at 8:00AM! Donations of antique items are still needed. For more information on this sale, or to arrange a pickup of items for sale, please call Stan Uher at 519-676-2432.

Blenheim Heritage House is located at 45 Sandys Street South and is open Tuesday to Friday, 1:00PM – 3:00PM, or by appointment. The Chatham-Kent Museum, located at 75 William Street North, is open daily from 1:00-5:00PM, admission by donation.
