Longtime Cemetery Restoration Volunteer John Skakel  honoured

On October 31st, 2016, Jim and Lisa Gilbert and Sheila Gibbs honoured the memory of Cemetery Restoration Volunteer John Skakel who passed away a year ago almost to the day by having a red oak tree planted in front of the Old Mausoleum at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham.

John recited “The Cremation of Sam McGee” in the Old Mausoleum on several occasions during the annual  Cemetery Stroll tours. He was also an enthusiastic and diligent volunteer who spent many hours digging up buried tombstones and restoring them to mark the resting places of people lost to time. A stone marker will be added at a future date.
